Some photos from the half marathon

Me and my friends from work before the race. They all ran great races and finished waaayy ahead of me!

Me running. How impressive…that is Union Station in the background I believe.

My 13.1 magnet

I admit it, I am proud to have this magnet on my car!

It goes nicely with my sweet LSU Eye of the Tiger Football.

First half-marathon DONE!

I did it. I did it ugly. I did it under adverse conditions. I did it.

The race was on Saturday (St. Patrick’s Day). I got seriously sick on Thursday — thought it was food poisoning, but after seeing the doctor (after the race), it appears to be a nasty stomach bug. I was so nauseous, had a fever, flop sweats, chills and the many visits to the bathroom. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t keep hydrated, for obvious reasons…ahem.

I rested as best I could, and in my mind all I could think of was the race. My rest. My lack of hydration. My lack of nutrition going into the race. I was scared and angry that this was happening after I had trained so hard to be prepared. I really doubted whether I’d be even able to get out of bed on Saturday to make it to the race.

By Friday afternoon, I was able to actually get out of bed and I thought keeping my scheduled massage appointment might help me feel better for the race. This turned out to be a poor choice. I felt more dehydrated and nauseous. I went back to bed.

In my mind’s eye, I saw myself on the night before my race carefully laying out my gear and carefully pinning my racing bib to my shirt. Reality? No. I spent the night before the biggest physical challenge of my short running life huddled under a blanket drinking shots of Pepto Bismol and taking Advil to break my fever. This was not going at all like I had hoped or wanted.

I set an alarm for 4AM on Saturday hoping that I would wake up feeling better and have time to actually eat something and get ready. I awoke drenched in sweat and felt horrible. I couldn’t eat, I realized I hadn’t charged my Garmin and I felt hurried to just get out of the house in order to make it to the race on time. I popped three Imodium pills, charged the Garmin for about 25 minutes and hit the road with Sport Beans and Vitamin Water Zero to sip on while I drove to RFK Stadium.

I have to admit, once I got to the race and had a few minutes to just sit quietly in my car, I started to feel a little better. I met up with my friends from work who were running the race and waited for our corral to get to the start line.

We were in the last/slowest corral and it took 40 minutes for us to get to the start line. There were over 20,000 runners and I think all of them were lined up at the Port-O-Potties 20 minutes before the race officially started. I was ready to go. I actually felt good, while being very nervous.

When we finally crossed the start line I quickly felt the effects of not eating and being dehydrated. I cramped up within the first half-mile. I alternated running and walking for a bit and finally had to just tell my friends to go on without me. This was the first time I thought I would not be able to make it through the entire race.

As I hobbled along, I saw a guy running while juggling five balls. How he could do that while running occupied my mind while I kept moving along. He never dropped any while I saw him. I’d like to also point out that I was passed by a guy running barefoot and dressed as a horse. Humbling. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

Let’s skip forward to about six and a half miles in when I felt my second toenail on my right foot peel back off my toe. PAINFUL. This was the second time I thought I would not make it through the race. I had to walk. I limped actually. It hurt, I really thought about waving down the medical van and just getting a ride back to the end.

I rationalized in my mind that if I turned around and walked back to the start line, it would be almost 13.1 miles, so I should just stick it out and try to finish it walking. I was feeling so dehydrated, and every time I got to a water station, I would stop and drink four or five cups of water and Gatorade (if they had it). I am glad I did this because by the time I got to the next water stop, I would have awful cotton mouth. I just kept moving. Somehow, I was able to make it.

By the time I got the the ten mile point, I knew I was only a 5K away, yet it felt like I couldn’t go another mile. I started looking for any building or landmark that seemed to be close to RFK. Every turn I hoped to see at least a little piece of the stadium on the horizon. No luck.

The last water stop was between the eleventh and twelfth mile, so I drank up. I knew the next taste of water would be in the finish area and I would be there wearing my medal. I used this as motivation to drag my throbbing toe and burning feet along with my cramping legs to the finish.

I finally saw what I wanted to see, and now it seemed like I couldn’t move fast enough to get there. I was so tired. I was cramping. I just wanted it to be over. Finally, it was.

I went to the doctor on the way home for the pleasure of having a needle pierce my toenail, but it actually made it feel so much better. So now, I rest and reflect. I felt bad. I was malnourished. I was dehydrated. I stuck it out. I am glad I did it.

4+2=win

5:30 AM arrived early today. I had plenty of sleep, but it still felt like the worst idea in the world to get up and go run at the gym. I didn’t want to go, but I did. It was nice a cold, so running at the gym was definitely a good idea. I got in 4 miles with a decent effort and I wasn’t too fatigued by missing a few days of no running. It felt good to be back in the swing of things.

I got to the gym a little early for the training session with Brandon so I did some walking (nothing too crazy, just move) — I got 2 more miles in. The training session focused on chest, back, and shoulders. Good stuff. The idea is to build some muscle mass and keep the metabolism firing while I train for the running endurance. So far, so good.

A racing I will go…

So, how do you get over nerves about your first half marathon? I don’t know exactly, but what I am doing is schedule more races. I can’t worry too much about this first one when I have two more before we head to Italy this June. I am doing the Parkway Classic (GW Parkway 10 Miler) and the Frederick Half Marathon this Spring after I do the DC Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon.

I am beyond excited that Muffy has decided to do the Frederick Half Marathon with me. I am also running a few 5K races with Molly, so this will be fun!

I ran this morning at the Hyatt we stayed at last night in Bethesda. It was good to run again after not feeling well. The gym is on the top floor of the hotel, so as I ran on the treadmill I had a great view of the sunrise. Not bad at all.

I will make it a treadmill day, I’ll take it!

Sinus infection is the culprit

After more rest and no improvement in my congestion, I broke down and went to the doctor. Seeing the doctor is not something I do. My last visit to see my doctor was last summer when I ruptured my calf. The time before that was when I tore my ab muscle. See a pattern?

I don’t dislike my physician, she is a kind person and she doesn’t appear to be going through the HMO-financed motions when we see each other. I just don’t go to the doctor — I am probably like a lot of guys. I go when something is wrong and I can’t exercise, otherwise I stay away.

So, after not being able to run without coughing last night, I made an appointment today. The antibiotics are attacking what is a sinus infection — hadn’t thought I had a sinus infection, my money was on Tuberculosis after browsing WebMD. Oh well, there goes my connection to Doc Holliday…

I should be back up and running (literally) in a few days. Modern medicine is pretty cool.

Ok, a disappointing football season is over…time for baseball

This college and NFL football season is over…finally. Bad week in the Lewing house when LSU is humiliated in the National Championship game and the Saints lose their playoff game a few days later. Not a lot of ESPN watched after that week…but I did watch the Super Bowl. I thought the commercials were blah, and Madonna’s halftime show was meh.

So, it is Monday and I am not able to run yet. Need another day to get over this being sick stuff. Very inconvenient. Having said that, I can start watching MLB Network and get ready for baseball season to begin.

Growing up in Louisiana, I watched a lot of Atlanta Braves baseball on TBS. When I think about my grandmother, I have this image of her sitting in her living room watching the Braves. In the early 80s, TBS on cable was really the only way to watch baseball. We were closer to Houston and Dallas, but the thing TBS did really well was bring Atlanta Braves baseball to all these small southern towns that couldn’t watch closer teams on local networks. Anyway, I was a Braves fan when they were not great. Those powder blue road uniforms and images of Dale Murphy blasting as many home runs as strike outs are strong childhood memories for me.

Now we live in the DC area, and my Girlies are growing up with Washington Nationals baseball. We also live close enough to be in the Baltimore Orioles tv market and in our town, we have the Frederick Keys minor league team. Quite a difference from my childhood where we got what we got on tv in Louisiana. We’ve been to Nats games and I have to admit, we have more fun going to the Keys games.

So, my next run will probably include a lot of MLB Network streamed on the Sirius app on my iPhone.

Hit the pause button, reflect, change

Sick. Yes, it happens. I don’t get sick too much, and it usually is the short-lived cold my daughters bring home from school. I am on solo dad duty this weekend while Muffy is on a business trip, so this means a lot of daddy-daughters time. We went to see “Big Miracle” last night. It was a good movie. I think the Girlies want to join Greenpeace now.

I like the extra time to spend with the Girlies. We see movies, we put puzzles together, we eat sushi. Simple stuff, I love it. I should do this more. I recently finished the biography of Steve Jobs — I am not as obsessed with working as he was, but there are similarities that make me uncomfortable when I stop and think about it.

So, as I write this blog post on my Macbook Pro, my daughters are watching movies on their iPhones. Time to go do something fun.
